While fireworks are a classic way to celebrate for humans, many dogs are terrified of the sight and sound of them.
With the Fourth of July just around the corner, here are some tips that may help reduce your dog's firework anxiety.
"July 4th is particularly nervous for us veterinarians and us who love our animals because more dogs are reported missing on July 4th than any other day of the year," Dr. David Haworth told 9NEWS.
The first tip Dr. Haworth has for pet owners on the Fourth of July is to move pets to an area where there are no fireworks if possible.
If you can't do that, he urges owners to make them feel safe by putting them in a place where they can't run away like a small room with plenty of blankets.
Owners can also counteract the sound of booming fireworks by playing music inside the house.
According to Petmd.com, you can create a makeshift dog anxiety vest by wrapping a stretchy fabric around your dog's shoulders and chest. Like swaddling an infant, a snug garment with gentle pressure can reduce a dog's fireworks anxiety.
The website also suggests going on a long walk or spending time playing during the day so your dog will be tired before the fireworks start. If a dog is mentally and physically exhausted it might be less likely to react to the fireworks.
